Family Business

Family Business is one of the hottest topics for business today involving many operations with generational change. This forum discussion between a government officer, a family business adviser and a family business operator will strike a cord with most people. Overall this was a very informative and interactive session of great interest to everyone that attended.

Department of Trade & Economic Development (DTED)

Philip Brian (Phil) Tyler JP AFAIM

Phil Tyler has a long history of private and public sector involvement.  He has worked in small business, local government, politics, the not-for-profit sector and the South Australian State Government, with some of his most recent roles include:

  • Chief of Staff to the Minister for Transport and Local Government
  • Senior Consultant Business in the Community (South Australia) Inc
  • Manager, Western Area BEC.
  • Chief Executive Officer, Whyalla Economic Development Board.
  • Director, Development Initiatives in the Office of Local Government

and in December 2002, Phil was appointed as the Executive Director of the newly established Office of Regional Affairs in South Australia and in April 2008 also was given responsibility for the Office of Small Business.

 

Phil has a Graduate Diploma in Management and a Master’s degree in Administrative Studies from the University of South Australia.  He is a member of the South Australian Government’s Regional Communities Consultative Council, an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management, and a former director of SA Great (a media driven organisation that promotes and mentors excellence in SA), and since 2002 the Standing Committee on Regional Development (SCORD).  For a number of years Phil was the Deputy Chairman of the South Australian Regional Development Association (now Regional Development SA).

 

He has written over 30 reports, articles and seminar papers on a diverse range of subjects such as the introduction of a Police Ombudsman for South Australia, a marketing strategy for emu farming in SA, pay TV’s impact on sport, and regional development.  In January 2005 Phil was selected by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to undertake a peer review of regional development and governance in Finland.  In June 2005 he reported his findings to a High Level meeting of the OECD in Paris. Phil is a Justice of the Peace and is a former President of the Rotary Club of Whyalla.  In 1975 Phil was the winner of the Rotary Youth Leadership (RYLA) Award.

Mr. Paul Smith

Paul joined the petroleum industry after graduating from Sydney University as a Bachelor of Economics, progressively undertaking a number of Senior Executive and General Management responsibilities throughout Australia involving significant Marketing, Corporate Planning and profit centre accountabilities.

In the latter part of his thirteen years with Mobil, he directed a number of strategic planning projects and initiatives for the Marketing Division and had the National Marketing and Planning responsibility for the road-surfacing subsidiary, Emoleum. 

Subsequently Paul spent five years in General Management roles in the Logistics industry, primarily leading the building of strategic alliances with major corporate clients of the road, rail and air activities of Mayne Nickless and V/Line.

In more recent years Paul has been intensively involved in leading his own Consultancy providing advice to Organisations/Executives/Managers over a broad industry base.

In 1999 he founded the Carnegie Management Group where his and the Team’s core focus is Transition Management through Mentoring - undertaking significant assignments in the following areas:

  • Organisation and Leadership Development for Business Owners & Executives
  • Family Business & SME Strategy Development & Implementation
  • The Human issues of conflict resolution, relationship building and communication skills enhancement - both for the person, family and people in business
  • Strategic Business Enterprise Planning, Re-Engineering & Change Management
  • Executive Mentoring, Career Planning, Management & Transition

Mr. Philip Sims - Robern Menz (Mfg) Pty Ltd (Chairman)

Robern Menz (Mfg) Pty Ltd was established in 1908 and manufactures and market brands including Menz Confectionery (Fruchocs, Crown Mints), Robern Fruit Snacks and Medlow Confectionery. As a 4th generation family business which commenced with Philip's great grandfather, Philip has been exposed to the family business from a young age however officially joined the business in 1992 after completion of a Bachelor of Business degree from the University of South Australia in 1989 and following 3 years experience working for the multinational hair care company Schwarzkopf as NSW Sales Manager. Further qualifications include Export/Import Certificate (Australian Export Institute 1994) and Graduate Certificate in Management (Adelaide University 2001).

Philip became Chief Executive Officer of Robern Menz in 2001and is also a director of the company.

Philip has been on various executive committees including the ‘South Australian Dried Fruit Association’ and the 'South Australian Food Exporters Association (Food Adelaide)’. Elected onto "Family Business  Australia' (FBA) SA Chapter's  executive in 2004, Philip is currently  chairman of FBA's SA Chapter and FBA's representative on the South Australian Governments 'Small Business Development Council'.
